Child of a Dead God: A Novel of the Noble Dead by Barb Hendee and J.C. Hendee

In the Hendees’ complex and bloody third Noble Dead novel (after 2006’s Traitor to the Blood), powerful and ambitious Noble Dead vampire Welstiel is in a desperate race with his dhampir half-sister Magiere to find a mysterious orb. As he builds a force of vampire minions to assist in his journey, Magiere travels though elven lands, where she is hated and feared for her semivampiric nature, determined to find and protect the artifact. The elven patriarch called Most Ancient Father offers resources to aid her on the quest while planning to steal the orb from her later. Magiere’s friends and allies have a long and dangerous journey ahead of them. Interspecies distrust, grand ambitions and the lure of dangerous secrets protected by the undead drive the action in this neat mix of horror with more traditional fantasy elements.

Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, Book 3) by Patricia Briggs

Shape-shifter Mercy Thompson has a complex life, juggling two werewolf lovers and a job working for a fae mechanic; things get even more hectic when her boss and mentor is arrested for killing a citizen of the fae reservation. As the fae seem content to let him rot, Thompson takes it on herself to clear her friend’s name, beginning a lone-wolf investigation that may cost her life. Briggs’s third novel featuring Thompson (after Blood Bound) is another top-notch paranormal mystery; her well-balanced contemporary world, where humans live uneasily among werewolves and fae, is still a believably lived-in world; the ever-present threat of government legislation against nonhumans (though familiar to X-Men fans) adds weight to her paranormal elements, and thoughtfully researched mythology adds rich detail. Thompson is a sharp, strong heroine and her lycanthropic love triangle is honest and steamy. Briggs never shies from difficult material, and she moves effortlessly from werewolf pack psychology to human legal proceedings, making this a tense, nimble, crowd-pleasing page-turner.

Bond of Fire (Texas Vampires, Book 2) by Diane Whiteside

This audacious second installment of the Texas Vampire series (after Bond of Blood) blends European and American history and contemporary paranormal romance into a shockingly heady brew. Beautiful widow Hélène d’Agelet fell hard for Jean-Marie St. Just, George Washington’s former spymaster turned compañero—enslaved by blood—to the sister of powerful vampiro mayor Don Rodrigo Perez. The Napoleonic wars disrupted their affair, and after an explosive espionage incident involving Hélène’s sister, double agent Celeste de Sainte-Pazanne, Hélène and Jean-Marie believed each other dead for centuries. Celeste’s lover, Raoul, killed her parents, so Hélène killed Raoul. Now the sisters, both of whom have become vampiras, are hunting each other down, bent on revenge. Filling the story with explosions and blood and the prose with enough French, Spanish and purely invented terms to require a glossary, Whiteside merrily rampages through history and vampire lore, building an impressively sturdy and compelling narrative from the wreckage.

Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1) by Charlaine Harris

Having an affair with a vampire has one main benefit for Sookie. Her predilection for reading minds doesn’t seem to work with him. But as is common with vampires, violence follows in his wake, and she becomes afraid that she might be more than just a spectator. Christine Marshall takes on a drawl that hints of Louisiana as she narrates for Sookie and the other female characters. She is joined by William Dufris, who assumes the role of the vampire, as well as the other male characters. Marshall and Dufris work well together, maintaining a steady rhythm in the narrative passages and dialogue

Dead Perfect by Amanda Ashley

When Shannah, dying of an obscure, incurable disease, passes out on the stoop of Ronan, who is a vampire, two birds are killed with one stone: Ronan moonlights as a romance author and needs a woman to pretend to be him on tours (especially during the daylight hours); Shannah needs Ronan’s blood to stay alive. As he coaches her to impersonate him and feeds her, Ronan falls more and more in love. And with each passing day, Shannah’s body grows weaker, but she resists being turned into a vampire because she doesn’t want to lose her humanity entirely. It’s the age-old vampire-human dilemma, given a clever and funny turn by Night’s Touch author Ashley.
